Anguilla – Festival del Mar 2013

On our recent visit to Anguilla we stopped by to join the festivities at Festival del Mar in Island Harbour located on the Eastern tip of the Island.

The Festival del Mar is a unique celebration of the heritage of this small fishing village and therefore it is a celebration of all things sea, featuring traditional cooking, culinary competitions as well as fishing tournaments, swimming- and boat-races.

Fresh local Food specialties

Like many of the local Chefs, Shawn Webster greeted us with the typical “Island-Harbour-Smile”.

The local specialties served during the Festival included fresh foods like lobsters, Anguillian Crayfish, Red Snappers, Johnny Cakes – grilled or fried right on the beach in Island Harbour Bay – as well as Conch and Whelk Soups and many other varieties of the local delicacies.

While the spirit of the people of Island Harbour makes this village a “must-see” during any visit to Anguilla – be sure not to miss next year’s Festival del Mar – usually celebrated during the Easter holidays (check for updates on the dates for 2014 on the internet page of the Anguilla Tourist Board).
